Uncle Jim Nelson has made the transition between life and death. Hi daughter Wendy eloquently described his passing in this way.
” I have known people who see the signs of their dearly departed around them. For one it was cardinals who showed up with special love from her mother, for another it was white feathers that she would come across and know that her grandmother was thinking about her.
I’ve been thinking about this as far as my dad goes. Hawks… Each time that I see a hawk I know that I’m on the right path. My mom and dad have sought Hawks during their travels and would make a game of counting how many they could see each road trip. For us as a family they have been a signal, a totem of sorts.
Back in the day CB radios were the way that travelers would talk to each other. We had one in the car and I remember many times that it would notify us of trouble ahead, or we would be able to find out what the road conditions were. I would feel a bit of a thrill when we would connect up with another traveler and be in a conversation, be in connection with the others around us. .My dad’s handle was The Hawk.
I listened to my father’s death rattle tonight , counting the seconds between his breaths. I was laying next to my mother, holding her hand. She was laying next to my father holding his hand. The image came to me of my father’s spirit shooting out of his heart and into the hearts of countless Hawks.
Now each time I see a raptor soaring I will know I am in the presence of my dad, visiting for a moment to say hello, and I will know that I’m on the right path.
My father transitioned last night. Watch for soaring raptors…”
I only hope that I can have half the courage that this man exuded every day of his life.
