As we have discussed in a previous post, exercise is very important for people with COPD. One of the goals of exercise is balance, another is strength, and another is endurance. Yoga helps with all of these goals. The only thing that Yoga does not address is the cardio that we need. For the cardio I use a stationary bike in the winter time here in the middle eastern states. In the spring, summer, and fall I like to go to the park or to one of the trails in the area to walk. I am most fortunate to have State Parks, National Parks, and city owned trails to walk.

I get out those free weights and the stretchy bands on occasion just because I am afraid that my muscles might not be getting enough workout with the yoga, cycling, and walking. Yoga concentrates on matching movement with breathing so that we do learn to control our breathing. I personally like Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga. I do some power Yoga now and then, but do not feel as refreshed with this practice.

I think that if I were not as limber as I am (former amateur gymnast) that I might like the power Yoga better. Along with that flexibility comes the Arthritic joints in my hands and feet. I have severe arthritis in my neck, but I am fortunate that it has not shown up in my knees.

I know, I know you are waiting for a link or a suggestion. Okay, I personally like Sara Beth Yoga, Yoga In The Dessert with Ali McGraw, and here is a link to a wonderful first Yoga class to see if you might like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7AYKMP6rOE
