There are many miracle cures out there. Some are so obvious that only a few fall for them, but a few are too many. One area that has become a problem is the surging natural cures. Many natural cures work, but most of the time the amount of broccoli or ginger that I would have to consume to make a difference is not logical. Then there are those with no scientific evidence at all and are part of the new snake oil salesmen’s inventory.

The major categories of the natural remedies fall into 4 categories according to Devon Slavens in a blog post for LPT Medical. Let us look at these categories over the next week and see how the cookie crumbles as the saying goes.

  • Supplements & Nutrition-Based Treatments: These include specific vitamins, herbs, and other supplements that advocates claim can relieve COPD symptoms or improve the disease itself in some way.
  • Lung “Detox” Treatments: These are treatments that claim to cleanse your lungs (and therefore make them healthier & relieve respiratory symptoms) by getting rid of toxins or other harmful substances from your lungs.
  • Lifestyle remedies: These include activities, habits, and lifestyle changes that are claimed to relieve COPD symptoms or otherwise improve the disease.
  • Stem Cell Treatments: These are cellular therapies involving stem cells—usually offered by private clinics—that are advertised to reduce lung disease symptoms or reverse the course of COPD.

One of the things that we know works is Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR).  Aside from the great information that you receive in PR, you will also learn a series of exercises that will help you in your daily life.  You know that I am a great advocate of exercise.  Another thing that PR provides is contact with others that are going through the same thing that you are.  For those of us who have not had the opportunity to participate in PR remember that the COPD Foundation offers some social hours.  Another great chance to interact with people like yourself is Right2Breathe which is sponsored by Joe Morrison.

Till next time stay well “keep on keepin on” and “Breathe Easy.”
